You might be wondering, just what exactly is Alternative Medicine? The name, Alternative Medicine, clearly defines it as an alternative to traditional or mainstream Western Medicine, which uses applied science. Nearly 40% of Americans use alternative medicine health care approaches developed outside of conventional medicine for specific conditions, and the number of people turning on to alternative medicine as a means to improve and maintain their health and well being is growing fast.
But as a Mind-Body journalist in the Field of Complementary & Alternative Medicine, I know this branding philosophy comes from a limited perspective on the subject, based upon how it best serves Western Medicine. And, I feel that the phrase alternative medicine implies inferiority. It almost feels like once being a woman, but now, instead being branded an Alternative Man! And as a woman who has a decade-long client practice using Bioresonance Feedback technology, Japanese Reiki techniques and Tibetan Kunlun toolsets, you can understand my lack of appeal with phrases with limits from exclusionary mindsets.
Global History of Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine healing has been practiced for as long as there have been human beings. Confucius, born 551 BC, outlawed dissection of the human body. As a result, Chinese healers discovered “chi” or “qi,” which are subtle, natural life force energy systems. Their mappings of energy flow and blockage points and connections to Earth elements form the basis of traditional Chinese Medicine, using non-invasive energy practices. And Chinese herbal remedies today form the basis of Western Medicine’s pharmaceuticals.
The “father” of Western Medicine is Hippocrates, born 460 BC in Greece; and medical doctors still repeat his oath to “never do harm.” The rise of Modern Medicine first began in the 1800’s, and with new advances in science, created a scientific revolution in healing in the 1900’s, especially within pharmacology and surgery. But while science-based technology and best practices are often unsurpassed for quality, the scientific method of study with research and statistical measures simply cannot be applied to the Healing Wisdom that preceded science by eons which most alternative medicine practices use today …and for a very good reason. Science is discovery, which when applied to a database of ever-changing beliefs, creates a new debate, calling for more discoveries.
Value of Scientific Studies of Food in
For example, Hippocrates also said, “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” In our lifetime alone, I’m sure you can recall the on-going debate when first science said that all vegetable cooking oils were good for us and animal lards bad, next only corn oil was researched and advertised as better for us, until then only olive oil was discovered to be best…but only in a total diet low in saturated fat, the really bad fat. Now today, carbohydrates and sugars are the enemy, not fat, except for really, really bad transfats. Surprisingly, corn oil appears to be fighting back, supported by some newly-minted statistic, I’m sure, and advertised, of course, as good all over again. Science truly does evolve and even devolve, as statistical research can simply point to a small moment of truth in time. I believe Hippocrates was right from the start. It’s our entire diet that matters. And our diet plays a major role in self-medication.
Value of Scientific Studies of Cultural Lifestyles and Diets
in Alternative Medicine
In the Field of Diet and Nutrition, it is Scientific Studies of Human Populations, and not any one individual study or even a compendium of research study statistics that are far superior for use in re-discovering Healing Wisdom, that which is necessary to guide us to health, well-being and longevity. And that is how the FDA will give approval to foods, herbs and ingredients, without benefit of scientific research studies. They are categorized as GRAS, meaning “Generally Recognized As Safe,” when consumed safely by human populations over long periods.
The most startling Population Study of Health and Nutrition ever conducted is “The China Study,” and that science is in. The traditional Western Diet, when adopted by China’s “newly-westernized, business” Population, destroys their health with disease and decreases their longevity. Not so where traditional Chinese Populations, known for longevity, consume traditional Chinese diets.
So isn’t high-quality longevity really your bottom line? If so, why would you entrust your entire health, well-being and longevity only to brand-new or ever-changing scientific Western data, often promoted without a Population Study as a track record and without guarantees?
Better Balance from More Healing Wisdom and Alternative Medicine
Healing Wisdom brings better balance. I know we can all use better balance in our lives practicing much more from the alternative medicine approaches that make use of Healing Wisdom and receiving far, far less advice from mainstream Medical PhD Scientists, who “either hate the unproven or are biased against alternative medicine therapies. Better balance for your body is defined as homeostasis, maintaining a natural, steady state of equilibrium. Our mind thinks of it as less anxious, even peaceful.
Also, include much less advice from Food PhD Scientists who “either hate eating or are obsessed” with food. Include Computer PhD Scientists who “either hate cashing their own paychecks or love only coded” virtual reality. And let’s not forget Rocket PhD Scientists who “either hate or are oblivious to all” life. All of my observations and opinions are entirely personal yet based upon my real-life experiences working with many of the predominant alternative medicine practices while being paid to work alongside all of them. Two out of the four PhD’s above literally could not either remember to come in out of the rain, while the other choose to sleep in his convertible outside the office in it. (HR was called in to enforce check-cashing and monitor rainy day behaviors.)
What is Healing Wisdom and What Alternative Medicine
Practices Are Best for the People of Today
Wisdom is “knowing from experience,” combined with a deep understanding or knowledge. Wisdom about healing, guides us to health, well-being and longevity.
You have probably heard about, even if you have not embraced, the healthy Mediterranean or the longevity Okinawa Population Dietary programs. However, the Healing Wisdom from Population Studies is by no means limited to food and herbs but expands to study many other alternative medicine components for stress-free lifestyles. And we all know that your Cardiologist will say that stress can kill you, except he will not know how you died.
Healing Wisdom is just not so simple as eating more Omega-3 fish oil. Nor is it Alternative Medicine vs. mainstream scientific Medicine, nor old vs. new, and definitely not the eastern and foreign vs. the western and traditional. Don’t become caught up in Scientific PhD insider-fighting; or what I call, the “not invented here or by me” mindset, great for feeding news-making publicity.
The hottest Science of Quantum Particle Physics, studies where energy transforms into physical matter and back again, seemingly through its own free will but more probably due to the energy of intention or expectation by the scientists. Discoveries by Quantum Scientists are highly supportive of how Healing Wisdom acts as preventative, not reactive; as stress-reductive, not stress-creating; and as the first line of healing at the root cause, not in the spiral of many downstream problems needing solutions.
How so? Healing Wisdom tools and technologies excel at the highest and most basic levels of life, the energetic levels of influence, now known to be more far-reaching than ever before. There is no better time than the present to research and to rethink the role Healing Wisdom and so called “alternative medicine” can play in the quality of your life.
Healing Wisdom is not Rocket Science or even really Quantum Science…it’s actually not science, but the “art of consciously living your whole life!” The more we spread the word of these safe, natural, and life affirming alternative medicine practices, the sooner we can stop referring to it as alternative medicine and start thinking of it as the first and best approach to take to living a long, happy life.
